We would like to give huge thanks to Ginger Ray, who has donated two wedding boxes to the Trust’s Palliative Care Team. These were donated for the benefit of end of life patients who decide to get married.
In the past couple of years we have had 2 weddings within the trust.
Mr and Mrs Norbury got married in 2022, at Pinderfield's Hospital. Michelle arrived to the hospital unable to talk, due to being permanently ventilated, however, since her recovery plan has started, she is now able to take breaks from the support and has found her voice again and said 'yes' to Darren's marriage proposal. The team organised Michelle's dress, bunting, flowers, cake, and even a surprise hen party!
Mr Sharp and Mrs Kenward also got married in 2023 at Dewsbury Hospital. Marian and Kenneth were previously married, in 1958, and had a son together, Paul. After 37 years together, they divorced, lasting 10 years. They stayed good friends, for their son, and in the year 2000, gave it another go!
Kenneth unfortunately became quite ill due to an operation on his leg, where he contracted an infection, during which Marian had the idea of marrying again! When the hospital staff heard about this, they were determined to make it happen. Following this Kenneth spent a few days in a residential home but unfortunately was readmitted to hospital when his health deteriorated further, where he sadly died on 5 October.
It is heartwarming to see these special moments being recognised within the trust, and for the newlyweds day to be made even more special!
Being able to pass on gifts such as these and improve our patients experience in these extra special moments makes our job even more wonderful.
