Scalp Coolers

We are thrilled to announce that MY Hospitals Charity have funded the Chemotherapy Day Unit at Pontefract Hospital with scalp coolers. These are lightweight silicone caps connected to a refrigeration unit, which works as a method of reducing chemotherapy induced alopecia.

The cap works by reducing the temperature of the scalp, creating a restriction in the amount of blood carrying drugs reaching the hair follicles. This will enable patients the opportunity to try and minimise hair loss as a result of cancer treatment.

Cancer patients often struggle with self-esteem and body confidence related to hair loss, and this new equipment will hopefully bring back their confidence in themselves and their overall happiness surrounding their cancer treatment.

These enhancements will also improve the quality of care our patients are receiving, and may encourage more people to undergo chemotherapy as a treatment option.
